Prof. Algirdas Utkus will be the head of the National Health Council. 80 members of the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania voted for his candidacy, 5 were against and 8 deputies abstained in a secret ballot on Thursday.

Prof. A. Utkus is the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University and the Head of the Department of Human and Medical Genetics of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. A. Utkus, a habilitated doctor of science, is also the head of the Medical Genetics Center of Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Clinics.

According to the law, the National Health Council is an advisory body to the Parliament for the health policy evaluation and formulation. The term for this position is 4 years. The Council is composed of 15 members.
