You are invited to attend lectures by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mara Sangiovanni from the University of Naples Federico II. The lectures are intended for students of the Master’s Programme in Systems Biology but are open to all interested participants.
Date: May 11–12, 2026, 11:00–13:15
Location: Room E4-03, VU Medical Science Center, Žaliųjų Ežerų st. 2, Vilnius
Lecture's topics:
- Images as 2D and 3D signals; grayscale and RGB images; image processing as multidimensional array structures;
- Transformer models for images and medical images;
- Deep Learning in omics: tasks, models (DnaBERT, StripedHyena), and open research directions;
- Challenges in applying Deep Learning to medical images and omics data: limited and complex data, explainability.
Dr. Mara Sangiovanni received a Master’s degree in Computer Science in 2009 from the University of Naples Federico II and a Ph.D. in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics in 2014. She has worked on applying machine learning methodologies to the classification of genomic and transcriptomic data generated by Next Generation Sequencing technologies. From July 2020 to October 2023, she was a researcher at ICAR-CNR in the Artificial Intelligence in Image and Signal Analysis Lab. She is currently a researcher at the University of Naples Federico II. Her research interests include Deep Learning models for the segmentation and classification of medical images, as well as the application of machine learning to omics data.
