History
In 1996, the Centre for Propaedeutics and Nursing Studies (head Prof. Danutė Kalibatienė) separated from the Clinic for General Therapy and Rheumatology. Located in Vilnius City Clinical Hospital since 1998, the Centre was subsequently renamed the Department of Fundamentals of Internal Medicine and Nursing in 2004, and then the Department of Nursing and Fundamentals of Internal Medicine in 2011 (until 2017). Since 2017, the Department of Nursing has been part of the Institute of Health Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine.
In 1996, Vilnius University established a four-year Bachelor’s degree study programme in nursing and in 2001, a two-year Master’s degree study programme in nursing. The Department of Nursing trains nursing professionals providing comprehensive studies in nursing theory and practice. The graduates integrate into the healthcare system of the Republic of Lithuania, work as lecturers in nursing at higher education institutions, nursing administrators in healthcare institutions, and highly qualified professional nurses in clinical practice.
The Department of Nursing nurtures nursing science and actively participates in national and international nursing education and research projects. The lecturers of the department provide consultancy on nursing science and practice, health education and management, and participate in nursing policy development and implementation processes.
In September 2019, new study programmes in nursing were launched: the Bachelor’s degree study programme in nursing and the Master’s degree study programme in advanced practice nursing.
Starting from 2020, semi-annual admissions to the Supplementary Studies in Nursing are conducted. They aim to broaden students' competences to the level of the University’s Bachelor’s degree programme in nursing, and thus allowing them to enrol in a Master's degree programme(s) at Vilnius University.
Since September 2025, the Midwifery study program has been launched, and the department’s name has been changed to the Department of Midwifery and Nursing.
