Representatives of the Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine (Dean Dalius Jatužis, Vice-Dean Vytautas Kasiulevičius, and Vice-Dean Laura Nedzinskienė) and the director of the Institute of Health Sciences (Prof. Natalja Istomina) visited Republican Šiauliai Hospital, where they received a warm welcome from the head of the hospital, Mindaugas Pauliukas.

According to Prof. Jatužis, the main goal of the visit was to inspect the hospital’s premises, talk with its doctors, and assess whether the institution and the city are suitable for Vilnius University residents, interns and students who would like to do internships. “We have to admit that when choosing a city, future doctors take into consideration not only the working conditions, but also the convenience of the city’s infrastructure, social well-being, opportunities for children's education, and other aspects important to young families.”

According to Pauliukas, cardiologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, and emergency physicians, as well as other current and future specialists, are especially welcome at Republican Šiauliai Hospital. In 2022, 59 new doctors arrived at the institution. Some of them were encouraged to choose Šiauliai by the financial incentive provided by the city government and the opportunity to immediately actively engage in professional activities “without standing in line to get to use the ultrasound”.

After visiting the hospital’s departments and units, the representatives of the Faculty of Medicine were pleasantly surprised by the newly renovated premises, modern equipment and young professionals already working at the hospital. “We see very good prospects for our residents to come here for at least partial residency studies and experience all the challenges of work in the specialty”, Prof. Kasiulevičius said. He was seconded by Assoc. Prof. Laura Nedzinskienė, vice dean of Undergraduate Studies, who believes both final-year medical students and advanced practice nursing students could improve their skills at the hospital in Šiauliai.

In the upcoming academic year, significantly more cooperation between the VU Faculty of Medicine and Republican Hospital is foreseen.
