Researchers and students of the Institute of Dentistry at the Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine are invited to apply for the Angelė and Sigitas Kazlauskas Named Awards. The awards are intended to fund innovative ideas and research projects in dentistry.
On 20 September 2025, the VU MF Council approved the regulations, according to which research activities at the Institute of Dentistry will be funded from the Angelė and Sigitas Kazlauskas Endowment Sub-Fund for VU Dentistry, managed by the Vilnius University Foundation. Researchers and students seeking funding may submit applications for their proposed research activities, which will be reviewed by an expert committee.
This year, funding of up to €5,000 is planned for three research projects carried out by students of the Dentistry Study Programme. A total of €30,000 will be allocated to fund research projects carried out by researchers and teaching staff of the Institute of Dentistry.
Applications for student research activities, filled in a special form (in Lithuanian), must be submitted jointly with the academic supervisor. Funding will be awarded to researchers and students whose proposed activities meet the established requirements, including the development of:
- a national or international research project, or the development/continuation of an existing project, contributing to the achievement, quality and internationalisation of research outcomes;
- an innovative research idea aimed at preparing to participate in national and/or international research consortia and/or contributing to the solution of relevant challenges;
- another research idea or study relevant to the strategic areas of the VU MF Institute of Dentistry and to the conduct, development and implementation of dentistry research and scientific activities at VU.
The main evaluation criteria for applications are: the originality and innovativeness of the idea, the rationale of the objectives and work plan, and the significance and international relevance of the expected results.
Eligible and justified expenses necessary for carrying out the research activities include:
- the purchase of goods (materials) and services;
- business travel and student travel;
- other expenses related to the dissemination of results, excluding the salaries of researchers and other research staff.

Last autumn, five applications were received for funding student research projects and four applications were received for funding researchers’ research projects. Taking into account the scientific merit, innovativeness, interdisciplinarity and other criteria, six research projects were selected as the best and shared a prize fund totalling almost €35,000. Two of the awards were worth €10,000 each.
The Named Awards are funded from the Angelė and Sigitas Kazlauskas Endowment Sub-fund, established in 2024. The purpose of the sub-fund is to ensure long-term and sustainable funding for the development of paediatric dentistry at VU, the enhancement of the quality of dentistry education, and the strengthening of dental research.
