Vilnius University stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine who currently face Russian aggression, and, as an act of support, is determined to speak out about violations of human rights, academic freedom and restrictions on higher education, as well as to publicly support the sovereignty of an independent Ukraine. Universities have a great responsibility to educate a new generation to think critically, love their country and be ready to defend it. During this time, solidarity among universities and a common tradition are what unites all those who hold dear the values of freedom and democracy.

Vilnius University, whose front wall was lit up with the colors of the Ukrainian flag on the evening of February 22nd, will continue to express its support for initiatives of the public, business and partners that promote democratic ideas and provide aid to Ukraine and its people.

Starting from 24th of February, 2022, we are expanding “LDK stipendija” (the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Scholarship) that has been established in the summer of 2020 for Belarusian students who had experienced political repression, in order to make available for them the opportunity to study at Vilnius University free of charge. Also, provide them additional financial incentives. This scholarship shall now also be accessible to students from Ukraine whose studies have been disrupted.

In order to maintain continuity of academic life, “LDK stipendija” shall make it possible for applicants to Vilnius University to apply for both bachelor’s and master’s studies. The university will cover their study expenses, while the most gifted students will receive a monthly scholarship during their first academic year.

Applications for the scholarship are now open. We are also prepared to seek various means to support the communities of our partner universities, to assist them in cases where they need asylum or aid.

Expressing our support for the Ukrainian state and people, we invite you to donate Ukrainian academic community, which is experiencing aggression by the Russian authorities.
